Something I always talk with my clients about this time of year is the importance of taking care of yourself during the holidays.
Well meaning family members, friends, and colleagues sometimes get so caught up in the celebration that they may forget or not truly understand that while it may still be a joyful time, it is also often a stressful time for those of us with chronic illness. Those that don't deal with the "chronic" part of illness, may not realize or think about the fact that it doesn't take a break or go away just because it's a holiday - there's literally no holiday from these chronic conditions!
I came across a great blog post about this recently from the founder of Be Well, Amanda Phillips. Here's a short excerpt: "While the holiday season is a time of grand celebration, family gatherings, and holiday traditions, for those of us with chronic illnesses, holidays bring added stress, extra exhaustion, and symptom management as we attempt to keep up with the fast-paced celebrations. The compulsion to participate in holiday activities, eat large meals, and press through can become overwhelming, physically and emotionally leaving us spent."
It's always important to set boundaries for ourselves, take time for ourselves as needed, and say NO when needed - but it's extra important during this time of year when the pressure to do so much and be in so many places and think about gift-giving and worry about food allergies and ..... well... I'm getting overwhelmed just writing about it!
Do yourself a favor and check out Amanda's full blog post to ensure you're taking care of you this holiday season!!
